Threads for Thought was created by two young students, Eric and Leigh Fleet, based on their passion for humanitarianism. Reflecting on the world, they became very aware of global issues, and were motivated to make a change. The issues concerning the two students included Darfur, Iraq, and Afghanistan, where thousands of lives are lost for what seem like undeserved reasons. They also reflected on the negative impacts manufacturing and consumerism have on the environment. To bring these issues to light, the students collaborated with Jonathan Wiesner and Britt Shoemaker to begin a clothing company. The students didn’t just display their messages through screen printed T-shirts or bags however. They instead took their concerns, and started to make the global changes needed within their own company. They believed the best way to begin making changes was to practice what they preached.
Threads for Thought uses only organic materials to manufacture their apparel. These materials include cotton grown organically, and the use of recycled water bottles for the production of polyester. This organic way of manufacturing allows for cleaner production, as well as less pollutants dispersed into the environment. Their concern however is not only globally focused. It trickles down even as far as the employees working within the factories producing the apparel. The owners of Threads for Thought carefully choose the manufacturers, ensuring they treat their employees fairly and with respect.
